Mage Study Project

Roles: Artist

The Mage Study was an interior environment project I did over the course of 10 weeks. I created all of the models and used Substance Painter and Photoshop for textures. The final product was rendered screen shots from UE4.

Project Objective

The goal was to create a complete interior environment in 10 weeks using modular assets.

Outcome

This is my best interior environment that I worked on at SCAD. Many of the modular assets were given variety by creating material instances and when that was not available using a large number of decals. The fire particles were not my creation and are from the free Infinity Blade pack.

Issues & Take Away

I love the idea of 'poor fantasy' which is basically an idea that magic is expensive, difficult, and time consuming with little reward. However, I had trouble finding good references and spent a lot longer than I had originally planned in concept. This worked out well for me as when I hit the clutter phase I had a lot to pull from compared to some of my peers who did not take as long to concept.

Although I did not create the fire particle, the candle and it's light system were my creation. I worked hard to combine Subsurface materials, light channels, and some invisible objects to create the effect I finally reached. I know that it is not hyper realistic but I did not attempt to create such work. Instead, it fits as part of the scene and has been one of the most informative technical art actors I have ever made.

Of course my lighting is far from perfect. A number of hard shadows and dark areas obscure too much of the environment. Had I known about and used the indirect lighting options in the skylight I think this would have improved the scene.
