Bottles Project

Roles: Artist

Bottles was a technical art project that I worked on over a a few weeks. I created various materials in designer, edited them in engine and then executed the logic to create a material transition.

Project Objective

The goal was to create any two materials and have them transition on the same mesh. That transition had to be triggerable by a sequencer in engine.

Outcome

The material transition works as intended and I added in tessellation to help with overall aesthetic of the transition. I wasn't focused on creating a narrative or an environment for this piece. This was one of my early attempts working with substance designer and I am pleased with the results.

Issues & Take Away

I had originally wanted to transition from metal to glass. This was a near impossible task due to the way shaders work in UE4. After a few painstaking nights and consulting my professor I abandoned the attempt and switched to a precious stone to metal transition.

I certainly didn't understand how powerful and complex Substance Designer was before this project. The project was supposed to focus on the engine material editor but I learned far more about possible new art pipelines from working with the Designer software. I had already been using Painter for about a year but hadn't had the opportunity to work with Designer.

While working with the Jasper material I learned a lot about subsurface materials and their logic. I know that there's a lot more related to subsurface that I have yet to grasp due to the short exploration of the class. After talking with some VFX majors I learned about pipeline differences between real time and rendering as it relates to subsurface.
